Though I admittedly never took the bus in Dunedin, I loved the affectionately painted bus stops around town. The most common themes are sea creatures, seascapes, space/sci-fi, and one-offs that relate to the local suburb. Over 60 of the bus stops were painted by a bloke names John Noakes who had a characteristic style.
The US Postal Service has fairly strict expectations for the size, style, and position of mailboxes or they will refuse delivery. Not so in NZ. It was a delight to see the creativity, resourcefulness, and self-expression that Kiwis put into their letterboxes and I frequently had to stop for a photo when touring around.
My hands-down favorite part of Burning Man was the custom mutant vehicles. I was thoroughly impressed by the mechanical artistry and dedication people put into these vehicles. They ranged from small 1-2 person cars to full blown party floats with professional sound systems and pyrotechnics.
