Educational Materials

Below is a selection of educational materials I produced for science outreach and geology teaching.

Geology of Yosemite Valley Virtual Field Trip

I created a 44-stop virtual field trip on the Geology of Yosemite Valley using Google Earth Web with contributions from Greg Stock, the Park Geologist. The VFT format tries to strike a nice balance between curated tour and self-guided exploration. The viewer learns about the bedrock, glacial, flood, and landslide history of the valley that all contribute to shaping this world-famous landscape.

Geology of Yosemite Valley Teaching Module

I designed and distributed a freely available four-part teaching module during the COVID-19 pandemic to bolster some of the field skills students were being deprived of. It seeks to train students to map the valley floor and assess some of the natural hazards present. It was used by at least 40 universities and remains a useful learning exercise regardless of student mobility.

Alpine Fault in the Hollyford Valley Poster

I created this poster with the help of Ursula Cochran at GNS Science, to provide the New Zealand Department of Conservation with an informative and easy-to-follow poster that could be installed in Hokuri Hut (located 500 meters from the trace of the Alpine Fault and where some of its most important science has been conducted.

GeoPad Website

I created this website to help promote digital field mapping techniques in both teaching and research. Through it and related interactions I have helped over a hundred students, faculty, and industry professionals adopt digital field mapping into their projects since 2016. The website is currently woefully out-of-date...so enjoy the pictures. I hope to update it with the exciting new apps and technologies now available.

Cathedral Cave Handout

Cathedral Cave is a popular tourist destination in the Catlins, south of Dunedin, NZ. Visitors pay a small fee to a Māori trust to use the parking lot and trail to access the beach where several impressive sea caves can be reached at low tide. I created this handout (including a detailed survey of the main cave) for the trust to provide geological explanation to their visitors. It is one of the 30 longest sea caves in the world.

Caves of Waikouaiti Exhibit

The Waikouaiti Museum, a small local museum north of Dunedin, has a wonderful display of historical photos and human history but little on the area's fascinating natural history. This poster was created to accompany a stalagmite and a couple historical photos in the museum. It discusses the geological history and scientific significance of these local caves, especially highlighting research in progress.
